"Back Fences (Provincetown)" by Mabel Hewit, Amer., (1903-1984) WoodcutLithograph, 1930's 40's, ed. unknown but small, 7 3 4 x 11 1 4, signed & titled in pencil, on warm white BFK paper. Light trace of mat line. Hewit was a modernist painter and printmaker based in Ohio who spent time in Provincetown and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy. Her white line color woodcuts were showcased recently in an exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
The bright white at right edge is a reflection from the sheen of the japan paper
adding a "flutter" of life to it's subject
