Description

Scirpus atrovirens (Dark-green Bulrush)Short lived and non aggressive, Dark green Bulrush is common in marshes and on shorelines. It grows up to 5' tall in clumps that buffer other aquatics against wind & waves. This rush provides important food & cover to many species of waterfowl, songbirds, and shorebirds, as well as muskrats. Clusters of dark, chocolate colored seeds are produced in late summer. Even though it is called "Swamp Milkweed" it is a terrific normal/medium moisture and it works well in rain gardens

When planted in mass it can form a lush carpet similar to a ground cover

It has perky yellow flowers that last quite a while and are quite showy in May
